According to a survey conducted by the polling firm Zogby International in May 2007, more than 75% of Americans are concerned about the global reputation of the United States and over 70% are “calling for a concerted national effort to improve America’s reputation.” In those famous words of Mohandas Gandhi, however, we must be the change we wish to see.

The Coalition for Citizen Diplomacy (CCD) is a group of organizations based
throughout the United States, all actively engaged in promoting exactly what the
American populace wants. Citizen diplomacy is the active involvement of the American
citizen in shaping the world’s view of the United States. Envisioned at the Johnson
Foundation’s Wingspread Conference in Racine, Wisconsin in March 2004, the CCD has
since then convened over fifty community summits and a National Summit on Citizen
Diplomacy, intended to strengthen the citizen diplomacy movement.

Now, the CCD is organizing the second National Summit on Citizen Diplomacy in
partnership with the U.S. Center for Citizen Diplomacy. The Center, founded in July of
2006 and headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa, promotes opportunity for all Americans
to be citizen diplomats and affirms the indispensable value of citizen involvement in
international relations. The US Center will sponsor the first national awards ceremony
for citizen diplomacy at the summit.

The second National Summit on Citizen Diplomacy will feature keynote speaker Dick
Martin, author of the book Rebuilding Brand America. Published in January 2007, the
book presents case studies of American business abroad and establishes what America
must do in order to restore our international reputation. The Second National Summit
on Citizen Diplomacy will feature a number of other speakers, representing a variety of
interests but all dedicated to the promotion of citizen diplomacy. For more information,
please visit the Coalition’s website at www.citizen-diplomacy.org.
