National Global Education Institute
Building America’s Global Intellectual Capital for the 21st Century
Collaborating with J. William & Harriet Fulbright Center
America’s future economic strength and national security depend on its ability to prepare young people to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century and be leaders in the global generation. America’s K‑12 educational system must graduate students who are well prepared in literature, mathematics and science but also in their knowledge and understanding of global issues, foreign languages and world cultures.
The U.S. Center for Citizen Diplomacy, and the J. William & Harriet Fulbright Center, located in Washington, D.C., are collaborating on the development of a National Global Education Institute (NGEI). The U.S. and Fulbright Centers will lead this initiative to convene a state-based task force on K-12 education in each of five selected states based on the Iowa model that was convened in 2009.
With the leadership of the U.S. Center for Citizen Diplomacy and the J. William & Harriet Fulbright Center staff each state will:
- Create a state wide task force on global education
- Review the status of K-12 international curriculum in each state, assess the resources available, and create an action plan
- Conduct statewide symposiums on global education open to teachers, administrators and school board members throughout the state. The symposiums will focus on the case for global education, integrating global concepts in to the curriculum, best practices in language instruction, access to available international resources in each state and information about exchange and study abroad opportunities
- Provide international travel/exchange opportunities for teachers in each state.
NGEI will also:
- Convene a national summit on International Education for leaders from all participating states after the three year project concludes
- Expand a comprehensive web site featuring resources on international education and exchange opportunities specifically available to K-12 educators, teachers and students
These actions will substantially increase the focus on international concepts throughout the curriculum, increase the study of foreign languages and support the expansion of international exchange opportunities for both students and teachers. The Institute will have a direct impact on the next generation of leaders and address the challenge posed by Stephanie Bell-Rose, President of the Goldman Sachs Foundation, when she stated, “If young Americans are to take on challenging global leadership roles in the future, they must possess a deep understanding and appreciation for other cultures, geography, history, and languages. The world will demand it of them and we must demand it of our education system.”
